As The Treasury began to close their stores down in the 1980's, many became some of the original Home Depot stores, like this one did. Home Depot moved to a new store next door sometime in the 1990's. After Home Depot closed the building was turned into the Westland Commons shopping center. The Albertsons was built where a part of the original Treasury store was torn down. The Albertsons closed very shortly after, but not mentioned in the article about Albertsons pulling out of the Miami region in November 2001, so it probably closed before then, making it one of the shortest lived Florida Albertsons. ** Proposed but Unbuilt/Unopened Albertsons Florida Stores:
Store # | Store Name | Address | Shopping Center | City | St | Zip Code | County | Store Info |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
43XX | ALBERTSONS | Either NE or SW Corner of 9th Street N. and 94th Avenue N. | St. Petersburg | FL | 33702 | Pinellas | This store was planned as one of the original Skaggs-Albertsons stores. Construction was supposed to begin on this store at one of the two undeveloped lots at this intersection in Summer of 1974, according to an old newspaper article. Construction never happened here for reasons unknown. Both possible lots have since been developed with smaller businesses. | |
43XX | ALBERTSONS | SE Corner of S. Beneva Road and Bahia Vista Street | Sarasota | FL | 34232 | Sarasota | Albertsons was the highest bidder for this property that once housed offices for the Sarasota County School Board. In order to obtain the property, Albertsons had 150 days to go to the zoning board and get the property changed from government use to commercial use. Local residents in the condominium complex adjacent to the site did not want an large 24 hour supermarket next to them, citing traffic concerns, so they protested to the zoning board. The board then rejected Albertsons plans, so Albertsons forfeited the bid. Albertsons later opened thier first Sarasota store in 1988 in the Landings Shopping Center, developed by the same company who later bought this proposed Albertsons site to build a small neighborhood shopping complex. | |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | SW Corner of US 98 and Marcum Road | Lakeland | FL | 33810 | Polk | This planned store from 1994 was supposed to act as the so called "replacement" for the recently closed Albertsons on S. Florida Avenue in Lakeland (Store #4322). Plans for this store were being made when the closure of the original Lakeland store was announced. This store was planned to open in 1995, but was never built. When this store never materialized, Albertsons still was rumored to be looking for another Lakeland site, but Albertsons never built a new store in the city. | |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | NW Corner of Prima Vista Blvd & Airoso Blvd | PROPOSED SHOPPING CENTER | Port St. Lucie | FL | 34983 | St. Lucie | Albertsons offered to buy Sportsman's Park, PSL's oldest park, from the city in 1996 to build a new store and shopping center at the site. As a part of the deal, Alberstons would have given the city land elsewhere in town for a new park. The city took interest in this deal for a while, but fierce local opposition about the plans made PSL city council members ultimately shoot down Albertson's offer. Four years later, Albertsons built store #4466 1.5 miles down the road in St. Lucie West. |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | SW Corner of S. Florida Ave. and County Road 540A | Lakeland | FL | 33813 | Polk | Albertsons was rumored to be looking at this site in 1999 after plans for the Marcum Road store fell apart, next to a proposed Home Depot. The Home Depot was later built, but Albertsons never built a new store here. | |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | SE Corner of US Highway 1 and Sample Road | Lighthouse Point | FL | 33064 | Broward | Albertsons submitted plans for this store and a few outparcels to the city in 1997. Residents in the area did not want the store and were fiercely opposed to it, saying it was against city code to build a store at that site and would impede traffic flow on local roads. Some also felt the site was too small and wouldn't allow for enough parking spaces. The city council and zoning board later rejected Albertsons plans and appeal in late 1997. | |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | SW Corner of Miami Gardens Drive and NE 18th Road | SHOPS AT SKYLAKE (SKYLAKE MALL) | Miami | FL | 33179 | Miami-Dade | Albertsons was supposed to be the original supermarket anchor for the redevelopment of the former Skylake Mall. For reasons unknown, Albertsons backed out of these plans and Publix opened a store at this site instead in 1999 (There was a lawsuit of some kind going on between Albertsons and the developer of the site, which probably led to Albertsons backing out on this store). The building Publix currently operates in is actually a modified Albertsons structure. |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | SE Corner of State Road 54 and Collier Parkway | WILLOW BEND TOWNE CENTRE | Lutz | FL | 33549 | Pasco | As Publix planned to relocate their store in this shopping center across the street in 2002, Albertsons was approached to open a new store in the former Publix. Albertsons looked into the site but found that Publix had a lease restriction in their contract barring any competing supermarket from taking over thie site after they left. Bed Bath & Beyond was then approached to take over the former Publix after Albertsons backed out, but they also did not accept for reasons unknown. The former Publix eventually became home to a Lifestyle Family Fitness Center in 2009. |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | NW Corner of Peachland Boulevard and Veterans Boulevard | Port Charlotte | FL | 33954 | Charlotte | Albertsons released plans to build their first Charlotte County store and gas station here in this newly expanding part of town in October 2000. Not long after, Publix released plans to replace their store across the street from the planned Albertsons with a new, larger store in the empty lot adjacent to their existing store. Both stores, though, never materialized for reasons unknown. The Albertsons site was cleared around 2010 for outparcels to be built on, but nothing major has happened to the site since. | |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | SE Corner of Sheridan Street and N. 14th Avenue | SHERIDAN PLAZA | Hollywood | FL | 33019 | Broward | Albertsons first submitted plans for this 45,000 square foot store in 1999. After the plans were made public, the community was outraged and began having protests at this site to stop the construction of this store. Albertsons eliminated the gas station from their plans to try to calm the community, but they kept protesting, citing traffic concerns and negative environmental impacts on the neighboring West Lake Park. The city originally approved the plans for this store, but in January 2000, Albertsons decided to cancel their plans for building this store. The site is currently owned by Broward County as preserve land. |
44XX | ALBERTSONS | NE Corner of Fiske Blvd. and Barton Blvd. (1620 S. Fiske) | VILLAGE GREEN SHOPPING CENTER | Rockledge | FL | 32955 | Brevard | Albertsons was brought to this site in late 1998 as part of the redevelopment of the shopping center, bringing a grocery store back to the site following the closure of Winn-Dixie in 1995. After getting approval of the project, the plans fell through due to the discovery of contaminated soil in the ground beneath the shopping center, contamination left behind by a dry cleaners that closed many years prior. Due to the delay and construction and the costs involved, Albertsons pulled out of the project in late 1999. |
4408 | ALBERTSONS | NE Corner of W. Lumsden Road and Providence Road (1836 W. Lumsden) | Brandon | FL | 33511 | Hillsborough | Planned Jewel-Osco Florida store #4105. One of two lots for planned Jewel-Osco Florida stores sold to Albertsons when they bought their 7 Florida stores from them in 1992. Albertsons pursued plans to build this store later in 1996, but they later fell through for reasons unknown. By the late 1990's, the lot was divided into smaller lots for some restaurants and a CVS. | |
4409 | ALBERTSONS | SE Corner of Sheldon Road and W. Waters Avenue (8315 Sheldon) | Town 'n' Country | FL | 33615 | Hillsborough | Planned Jewel-Osco Florida store #4108. One of two lots for planned Jewel-Osco Florida stores sold to Albertsons when they bought their 7 Florida stores from them in 1992. I can't find any documentation saying Albertsons pursued the plans to build this store, but it was assigned the store number 4409. This lot sat vacant until 2004 when the Shops at Sheldon was built. Site currently home of Shops at Sheldon and a few other business complexes. | |
4453 | ALBERTSONS | NE Corner of Moffett Road (US 98) and Schillinger Road (CR 31) | ALBERTSONS PLAZA | Mobile | AL | 36618 | Mobile | Albertsons had plans to build a store here around 1996/1997, over 10 years after they had pulled out of Alabama by selling all of their Alabama stores to Bruno's. This store was to be built in the very outskirts of the city of Mobile. Albertsons was to build a new store with an attached shopping center on this site, but for reasons unknown, nothing ever came to be here. Albertsons sold off this land in 2002, and it remains vacant to this day. |
4457 | ALBERTSONS | SW Corner of Bee Ridge Road and Honore Avenue | PROPOSED SHOPPING CENTER | Sarasota | FL | 34233 | Sarasota | The owner of this property, one of the last open lots in Sarasota, wanted to develop it as a major shopping center in late 1998, which the city had been planning for for many years. Albertsons was the frontrunner to be the main grocery anchor in the center. The plans were later scaled back due to traffic concerns. One city comissioner then began to pressure the owner of the land to sell the lot to the county to preserve its natural significance and turn it into a park. The owner finally gave in and sold the land to the county for use as a park, formally scrapping all plans for this Albertsons. This site became Urfer Family Park in 2008. |
4480 | ALBERTSONS | NW Corner of S. Douglas Road and Zamora Avenue (1500 S. Douglas) | DOUGLAS GRAND | Coral Gables | FL | 33134 | Miami-Dade | This store was supposed to be built right around when Albertsons pulled out of Miami-Dade County in late 2001 on the site of the former Coliseum, an auditorium built in the 1920's when Coral Gables was first founded. That was torn down for a Service Merchandise, which was then torn down for the Albertsons/Douglas Grand. This Albertsons would have been a small store (44,000 sqft, compared to the typical approx. 60,000 sqft. stores) on the ground floor of the Douglas Grand Condominium complex. When Albertsons pulled out of Miami, they sold this property, along with store #4435, to Publix (Construction may have started when Albertsons was still in control, but I'm not completely sure). After aquiring the property, Publix opened in 2003 as the supermarket tenant for the Douglas Grand Condominium complex (The small size is more suitable for Publix anyway). It's a very unique design the way it's integrated into the condo complex. |
4481 | ALBERTSONS | NW Corner of Miami Gardens Drive (NW 186 Street) and NW 87 Avenue | ALBERTSONS (SEDANO'S) PLAZA | Hialeah | FL | 33018 | Miami-Dade | This store was supposed to be built right around when Albertsons pulled out of Miami-Dade County in late 2001 on a vacant lot in one of the westernmost urbanized areas of Miami-Dade County, near Interstate 75. After Albertsons pulled out of Miami-Dade County, this site sat vacant until 2007 when a Sedano's and accompanying shopping center were built at the site. |
4493 | ALBERTSONS | NW Corner of Caroline Street and Dogwood Drive (6516 Caroline) | SIX FLAGS SHOPPING CENTER | Milton | FL | 32570 | Santa Rosa | This store was supposed to open in 2004 as one of the last new Albertsons stores in Florida, and their first store in Santa Rosa County (just northeast of Pensacola). It was to be an unusually small, approx. 40,000 sqft. store occupying a former Piggly Wiggly space with an Albertsons Express gas station built out front. As 2004 crept on, Albertsons began to realize they were losing the supermarket game in Florida and they put the plans for this store on indefinate hold in mid-2004, just to scrap them soon after. The Piggly Wiggly site sat vacant until 2012, when it became a Pic N Sav Food Outlet. The outparcel set aside for the Albertsons Express has since become a Walgreens. |

This
Winn-Dixie opened in 2004, not long before their bankruptcy the next year. This
store replaced store #245, which opened in 1976 and was located in the parking
lot of the current store. This Winn-Dixie has one of the rarest interiors in
the entire chain, and may very well be the last store to still have this
interior completely intact.
|
LBV | Gooding's | 12521 State Route 535 | The Crossroads at Lake Buena Vista | Lake Buena Vista | FL | 32830 | Orange | This store opened in 1988 as a ground-up built Gooding's. The Gooding's chain reached a peak of near 20 stores in the early 90's scattered throughout Central Florida, however financial troubles and lack of desire by the descendants of the chain's founders to stay in the grocery retail business have shrunk the chain to this one store that somehow manages to survive to this day. |
219 | Publix | 350 US Highway 27 North | South Highlands Shopping Center | Lake Placid | FL | 33852 | Highlands | This store opened on July 12, 1980. It was replaced by Publix #1547 on January 12, 2017. This Publix remained virtually untouched for most of its 37 years in operation. |

Military Trail | Shoppes at Cresthaven | West Palm Beach | FL | 33415 | Palm Beach | This store opened in November 1987 as an Xtra Super Food Center, lasting here until that chain’s demise in March 1996. Winn-Dixie took over this building in 1997, and in December 2016 this store was converted from Winn-Dixie into Southeastern Grocer’s new Hispanic-oriented grocery format called Fresco y Mas. |
1102 | Publix | 1851 N. US Highway 1 | Taylor Creek Commons | Fort Pierce | FL | 34946 | St. Lucie | This store originally opened as Food Lion #828 in 1990. This was one of 60+ Florida Food Lion locations converted to the Kash n' Karry name in 1999 in order to boost sales in Food Lion's struggling Florida division. This Kash n' Karry would later close in 2004 when KnK pulled out of Central and Eastern Florida. This was one of three former Kasn n' Karry locations purchased by Publix during that closing round, and the only one that was previously a Food Lion. |
2383 | Winn-Dixie | 7580 University Blvd. | Uni-Gold Shopping Center | Winter Park | FL | 32792 | Orange | This store originally opened as a Florida Choice in April 1988. This location was sold to Gooding's in September 1988 when Kroger announced they were going to sell off their Florida Choice division. This was one of 9 Gooding's stores sold to Winn-Dixie in 2000. Winn-Dixie closed this store in September 2016. This building will become home to a new Lucky's Market and Ross Dress for Less in 2018. |
2325 | Winn-Dixie | 100 Canaveral Plaza Blvd. | Canaveral Plaza | Cocoa Beach | FL | 32931 | Brevard | This Winn-Dixie originally opened in the mid-80's in a building that was once home to a Wing Store Publix. Other than a remodel to the Marketplace interior in the mid-90's, this store was barely touched. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused part of this store's roof to collapse. Due to the roof failure, this store was gutted and remodeled to the latest Winn-Dixie prototype, and reopened in July 2017. |
SSC | Southgate Shopping Center | 2515-2633 S. Florida Avenue | Southgate SC | Lakeland | FL | 33803 | Polk | This shopping center held its grand opening on November 11, 1957, and has remained fairly original for most of its time. This shopping center contains the famous Southgate arch, which is a local and Florida icon. The plaza's Publix was torn down and rebuilt in 2009. |
1714 | Harvey's Supermarket | 1066 Clearlake Road | Clearlake Square Plaza | Cocoa | FL | 32922 | Brevard | This store opened as a Winn-Dixie in 1984, and was expanded into the Marketplace format in the early 1990's. This store remained untouched until 2017, when it was included in a batch of 7 Winn-Dixie stores to convert to the Harvey's brand. This store opened as Harvey's Supermarket on August 2, 2017. |
1895 | Kash n' Karry | 23 W. Silver Star Road | Ocoee Plaza | Ocoee | FL | 34761 | Orange | This store originally opened in 1990 as a Food Lion, and was converted into a Kash n' Karry in 1999 with the rest of the Eastern and Central Florida Food Lion stores. Kash n' Karry remained at this location until 2004, when the brand was pulled out of Eastern and Central Florida. Tropic Save supermarket took over this space after Kash n' Karry left. In the early 2010's, Tropic Save Changed names to Quadro Supermarket. To this day, this store is a very well preserved Kash n' Karry. |
1329 | Food Lion | 3826 S. Clyde Morris Boulevard | Food Lion Plaza | Port Orange | FL | 32129 | Volusia | This Food Lion opened in 1996 as one of the last stores built during Food Lion’s major push into Florida. This Food Lion remained open until February 2012, when it was announced that the remaining Food Lion stores in Florida, all of which were clustered in the Northeastern and North Central parts of the state, were closing. In November 2019, Perrine's Produce would take over the former Food Lion building. Coverage of the former Port Orange Food Lion in its new life as Perrine's can be seen here. |
1150 | Publix | 415 21st Street | Treasure Coast Plaza | Vero Beach | FL | 32960 | Indian River | This store opened as a Winn-Dixie in 1995, opening in a building that had housed a Woolworth store from 1970-1994. Winn-Dixie remained in this location until 2007, when this store closed as one of the later residuals of Winn-Dixie’s bankruptcy. Almost as soon as this Winn-Dixie closed, Publix announced they would open a store in this space to replace their smaller store (#642) located across the street. Publix opened in this space in November 2007, and did very little to alter this building from how Winn-Dixie had left it. |
2379 | Winn-Dixie | 7840 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway | Formosa Gardens Village | Kissimmee | FL | 34747 | Osceola | This store opened as a Gooding's in 1995. In 2000, this store was one of 9 Gooding's stores sold to Winn-Dixie, officially converting to Winn-Dixie by 2001. This store is famous for being custom designed to compliment the neighboring (now demolished) Splendid China park, including custom designed Chinese-inspired interior decor. |
506 | Grand Union | 4515 Lake Worth Road | Mil-Lake Plaza | Greenacres | FL | 33463 | Palm Beach | Grand Union opened at this location in 1982, and closed sometime around 1985 when the chain closed all of their remaining stores in Florida. Around 2000, Big Lots opened in the old Grand Union space, leaving behind many remnants of the Grand Union that came before it. |
688 | Kroger | 53 Exchange Street | Richmond Hill | GA | 31324 | Bryan | This Kroger store opened on March 20, 2008, replacing the original Richmond Hill Kroger nearby at 9701 Ford Avenue. The original store opened in September 1999, and is now split between a Goodwill and a few other stores. | |

172 | Publix | 4601 9th Street North | Neapolitan Way Shopping Center | Naples | FL | 34103 | Collier | Publix opened this store on August 28, 1996. This Publix is notable for being the last in the chain to contain the company's early 2000's decor package "Classy Market 1.0". It was included as one of 146 stores sold to Haggen following the Albertsons/Safeway merger in 2015, and spent a year as Haggen until that company had to declare bankruptcy due to its sudden growth after purchasing all of those stores. This store was one of 36 locations sold back to Albertsons at Haggen'a bankruptcy auction, purchased before Albertsons ultimately bought the remainder of Haggen's assets. Albertsons operated here until 2021, at which point the store switched banners to its sister chain Safeway following a remodel. |

Sweetbay opened in 2011 and was closed in February 2013, just months before the remaining Sweetbay stores were sold to BI-LO Holdings (now Southeastern Grocers). 2411 | Winn-Dixie | 6851 Gulfport Blvd. South | South Pasadena | FL | 33707 | Pinellas | The building housing this Winn-Dixie was constructed in 1978 as home to the first The Family Mart store in Florida, a new Food & Drug combination store owned by A&P. Following The Family Mart's pullout from Florida in 1987, this store was sold to Kroger, who converted it into a Florida Choice location. Florida Choice was dissolved in 1988, and the building was one of many West Coast Florida Choice stores sold to Kash n' Karry as part of Kroger's withdrawal from Florida. The Kash n' Karry was converted to a Sweetbay Supermarket in the mid-2000's and sold to Winn-Dixie in 2013 upon the retirement of the Sweetbay brand and Delhaize America's withdrawal from Florida. The Winn-Dixie opened in April 2014. | |

Publix #1715, built next door on the site of the former Jefferson Super Store (later Kmart), replaced store #80 on June 10, 2021. This store was converted into a Sweetbay Supermarket in 2006, and was sold to Winn-Dixie in 2014. In late-2024, this store was one of the Winn-Dixies chosen to convert into an Aldi, and closed in December 2024, with plans to repoen as an Aldi in mid-2025. |

Deleteon your planned store opening store 4457 was going to be in Sarasota fl on bee ridge and honore, your info is correct they sold the property to Sarasota county
DeleteThanks for the info! The planned Bee Ridge store is now in the table under store #4457. Albertsons really wanted to build that store from what I found online.
DeleteFormer employee of store 4310 worked their starting as cashier then went to the drug dept. and became a third man. Worked from 81 to 86 then left and came back in 87 for a few months worked as the meat deli manager. They strayed from their original business model and that's when it all fell apart. Worked with a lot of great people and wonder where they all ended up at.
