She commented on a photo I posted to flickr of one of her murals a few years back, and its nice to hear she's still doing well and is still involved in the artistic community. Pati made a lot of these murals, but as Publix closes and replaces their older stores, many are getting lost to progress. I have a number of her murals photographed, and I'd like to do a compilation post featuring all the others I've photographed one of these days (as this post is quite old, and I've documented many more of these over the last few years). Unfortunately, I don't believe any tile murals survive in Polk County anymore, now that the Grove Park Publix in Lakeland has been rebuilt. The closest surviving example of one of Pati's tile murals to Polk County looks to be at the Publix at Mango Square in Seffner, Hillsborough County: https://www.google.com/maps/@27.9829562,-82.2993289,3a,37.5y,76.03h,91.05t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sCVchlXjSJm73DyGkXzCXmA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192Albertsons Florida Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17350708223049245195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628100700550321985.post-45563216519058044552020-09-20T10:07:19.158-04:002020-09-20T10:07:19.158-04:00Pati Mills is a sweet friend of mine. I have never been privileged to see one of her tile murals in person so I thank you for sharing these photos. Where is there one close to Polk County?Mama Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09330128845761569553noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628100700550321985.post-36107936141325150222016-05-03T20:22:15.648-04:002016-05-03T20:22:15.648-04:00I looked up that Publix at Coral Ridge Shopping Ce...I looked up that Publix at Coral Ridge Shopping Center. It looks like the mural was either covered over or removed when the store was remodeled and expanded sometime in the 90's, which involved redoing the exterior of the store. It's a shame seeing all of the tile murals getting removed. Every one of them was made of hundreds of hand glazed tiles. I've been trying to document as many of the remaining ones I can as I find them, however they're becoming increasingly rarer as time goes on and as Publix replaces these older stores. The murals are fascinating to look at, especially the custom ones for a certain area, as you look at the story in it. I tried some searches and I couldn't find any photos of "The Queen of Florida" mural, however I did find this photo of the Coral Ridge Shopping Center from the 70's, and you can see the original Wing Style Publix at the bottom left. I'm sure the mural was a magnificent as you said.Albertsons Florida Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17350708223049245195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628100700550321985.post-43722678352132868512016-05-02T19:35:03.708-04:002016-05-02T19:35:03.708-04:00I grew up in Florida which was unusual because I w...I grew up in Florida which was unusual because I was born in the late 1940s. Most people came to Florida in the late 70s and early 80s. Although I did not,I've had many of my friends work for Publix as bag boys and stock boys and a few friends an relatives that still do. I was always intrigued with the murals at all the Publix stores which also reflected some local or city wide theme.
My favorite was located in Fort Lauderdale, at the Publix market in the Coral Ridge Shopping Center adjacent to Oakland Park Blvd and US 1. The mural was called "The Queen of Florida" and consisted of this beautiful blonde majestic figure surrounded by farmers, bakers and other individuals bringing the fruits of their labor (oranges, cakes etc.) to place at her feet.
I no longer reside in Lauderdale, but I did make a trip back to attend the wedding of a friend's daughter. I took the opportunity to go over to that Publix just to see the mural once more. Alas, they either removed it or covered it over with stucco. Too bad! It was magnificent.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
