The years escape me but maybe late 90s?
KnK was a discount-type grocer above SaveALot but below Publix and WinnDixie in the pecking order.
KnK was suffering terribly in their core Florida market, the Tampa Bay region and they sold a number of stores outside of that area to focus on one area, and renamed the stores "Sweetbay". The initial reception to SB was strong, the advertising was great, and the stores were colorful and fresh. But SB was hemmed in by a growing Walmart on the cheaper side, and a nicer Publix on the up side, growing SuperTargets, and got squeezed in the middle. They were bankrupt soon after.
SB had a concept store on Dale Mabry in Tampa just north of 275 - I think it was a new build around 2005ish? Used to shop it frequently, seemingly alone. No idea how they stayed open as long as they did.
Here's an article I found on the KnK->Sweetbay move.
https://www.supermarketnews.com/archive/kash-n-karry-rebanner-sweetbay-supermarkets-0

Happy super marketingAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628100700550321985.post-91634157994203389732022-12-25T09:31:39.011-05:002022-12-25T09:31:39.011-05:00I used to work for Kash n' Karry and Winn-Dixi...I used to work for Kash n' Karry and Winn-Dixie years ago in the early 2000s. Here in the Atlanta area we have a similar ethnic supermarket with intact Wavy Pastel decor from its days as a Publix, and Ingles in north Carolina took a store from W-D which still has its pre-Marketplace decor today. Kash n' Kar...That's an interesting thought. Kash n' Karry certainly would have been better for American Stores in Florida than Jewel-Osco was. I don't know why they let Kash n' Karry go, as the company was still in pretty good shape under Lucky's control and American Stores didn't have any overlap in Florida at the time of the acquisition. Kash n' Karry would have been stronger going into the 1990's as they wouldn't have had all of that debt holding them back from the leveraged buyout. Albertsons would have had a much stronger presence in Western Florida had they ended up with Kash n' Karry, but I don't think it would have helped their situation much. Albertsons' purchase of American Stores and problems that came from that is what led to their eventual break-up in 2006. By that time Publix was a powerhouse, and Albertsons still would have been a weak link even with more stores. The buyer that got the Florida stores was more concerned with cashing out real estate at the time than trying to save the stores. Having those extra stores may have prolonged Albertsons' presence in Florida by a few years, but I still think they would have ended up dying off in the end.Albertsons Florida Bloghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17350708223049245195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628100700550321985.post-62416082727209107352018-03-23T22:48:20.569-04:002018-03-23T22:48:20.569-04:00Thanks! They wouldn’t have tried to move Jewel-Osco into Florida in the early 90s. And, of course, Kash ‘n Karry probably would have ended up converting to Albertsons by the beginning of the new millennium. Would have Albertsons survived in Florida had that happened?Jimmynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628100700550321985.post-51129054213158108582018-03-18T22:38:45.425-04:002018-03-18T22:38:45.425-04:00Very cool find with this store!
